While this may not be something we are ready to do, simplifying is a key step to having a stress-free move. Good preparation way ahead of time crucial. Instead of being overwhelmed at such a huge task, start by doing small things. Go through a closet and start sorting items into piles, for example, one pile could be for things you want to keep, one for things to donate and one for a yard sale. A good way to tell if you really need an item is to think about how many times you’ve used it and has it been over a year since you did? If you haven’t used it in this time, chances are you never will.
What about those items that you cannot donate and that are unsafe to throw away? These kinds of items include old paint cans and chemicals, old electronic equipment and batteries, light bulbs etc. These items need to be disposed of in the correct way. If you are unsure about how to do this, call your local environmental agency, they will be able to advise you on how to dispose of these items safely. Doing this ahead of time is key because if you wait till moving day, its likely you will end up just throwing everything out into the garbage to get rid of it quickly.
An added benefit of simplifying ahead of time is that you will be helping to protect the environment by disposing of things correctly and recycling unused items. Remember, the more we get rid of before the move, the less we will have to transport to our new home.
